- Tarmons
Tarmons - overlooking
Sydney Harbour at Potts Point, Tarmons was the first permanent
home of the Sisters of Charity in Australia. Originally
built by Sir Maurice O’Connell and named as link with the
home of the O’Connell family in County Kerry, Ireland,
it was later purchased by Sir Charles Nicholson. In
1856 it was bought for the Sisters of Charity by a group of
prominent men Of Sydney, headed by the Honourable John Hubert
Plunkett. The Sisters took up residence at Tarmons in
1857 and in that same year established St Vincent’s Hospital
there. Tarmons also became the site of St Vincent’s
College and the Mother House of the Congregation. Tarmons
has 40 Commonwealth funded apartments.
